Assessor
for Teachers
Do you enjoy
marking?
Would
you like your marking to become less of a task and more of
a pleasure? Perhaps the actual marking of your students' work
gives you satisfaction, but you find administrative tasks
involved to be tedious. Do you dream of having marks recorded
automatically, parents and students complimenting you on the
standard of your work, and reports completed in ten minutes
for each class?
Assessor for
Teachers may be the answer to your dreams
Why
I wrote Assessor forTeachers
When
I was teaching Mathematics at Seaview High School (Adelaide,
South Australia), I came home one night and complained about
my marking to my wife. She said "You think you are good
at writing computer programs for school administration. Why
don't you do something to make your marking easier?"
That night Assessor for Teachers was born. I started by writing
a simple spreadsheet to record and add up the marks, but much
more was needed. I was spending too much time writing repetitive
comments in handwriting which students found hard to read.
I determined that my short remarks about student work on individual
questions were limited to a set of about 50 comments, and
one click transfer from a set list saved a lot of time .A
class set of longer comments on students' work on any task
usually comprised minor variations on a set of about four
different comments. I made the program store up to six comments
so that the most suitable could be pasted in for a different
student and then edited
As I developed Assessor for Teachers, I found that there were
considerable benefits in linking the stages of the assessment
process - preparing the assessment plan, setting the individual
tasks, marking the student's work, recording their marks and
reporting on their work.
When I began
to use Assessor for Teachers in my classes, I received positive
comments from students and letters from parents, mainly about
the quality of the information provided in the individual
task mark slips. The much greater advantages in preparing,
setting, marking, recording and reporting were obvious only
to me, This led me to develop the program in the hope of sharing
it with other teachers.

Assessor
for Teachers is more than a grade book
Assessor for
Teachers helps you prepare your assessment plan which you
can print and distribute early in the course. You can add
more information about the tasks when they are given to your
studentst, and your task descriptions can appear in each student's
course report
When setting
up the plan you give each task a weighting in accordance with
its importance and Assessor adjusts these weights to a total
of 100
Assessor
for Teachers helps you mark and feed back
As you mark
your tests you enter the student's mark for each question
and they are added as they are entered. When you have typed
the mark you see a standard list of about fifty question comments.
You can click any of these comments in to place or type your
own..
You type a
comment on the student's work on the whole task. These comments
can be stored and then pasted in for other students and edited.
These task comments are saved and can be used in the final
report. In addition as
you mark each student's work you can add to your end of course
comments on that student.
The program
prepares a results slip for each student which includes a
task summary and comments. This slip can be printed and attached
to the marked work or emailed to the student You do not have
to write marks or comments on the student's paper
Assessor
for Teachers records your marks
When you finish
marking each task you print a class summary sheet which shows
each student's mark in every question and total mark. It also
includes the mean and standard deviation for each question
and the whole task. Your marks are automatically transferred
to a grade book
The program
calculates a weighted score out of 100 on tasks so far completed,
enabling you to produce a meaningful interim report with a
percentage mark of grade at any time. You are able to deal
with work not submitted and acceptable absences
Assessor
for Teachers prepares your final report
With one click
you prepare your final report which can include the assessment
plan task details, your comments on each task nd your final
comment. Data files prepared by the program are merged into
a Microsoft Word Document. We will help you convert your own
school's report form to use this data
In setting
up the program you choose whether to display results as marks
or grades. All questions are marked numerically, but if you
wish to display grades all printed material given to parents
or students shows grades calculated using the levels you have
entered
"last
year it took me ten minutes to produce my final semester reports
"
